Moon Knight Reactions: What People Are Saying about the New Marvel Show

Marvel’s highly anticipated new Disney+ series Moon Knight will begin streaming on March 30, but ahead of the show’s debut a select group of people have already been invited to watch the first four episodes.

Their reactions seem to be overwhelmingly positive, with one saying “it’s the best MCU TV show ever.” There are enthusiastic variations on Moon Knight being like nothing we’ve seen in the MCU to date, and Oscar Isaac’s lead performance has also been praised, but the show does apparently have a few issues and I’m sure we’ll find out what they are, or how much they might personally bother us, when we get to see it for ourselves.

In Moon Knight, Isaac plays mercenary Marc Spector slash gift shop employee Steven Grant slash night-time vengeance dealer Moon Knight slash possibly New York cabbie Jake Lockley in Marvel’s first stab at a full supernatural superhero project in the MCU. Why all the slashes? Well, Marc suffers from Dissociative Identity Disorder, and therefore has a handful of identities to choose from when he’s fighting crime. I didn’t even count his psychic connection to Khonshu the Egyptian moon god there, who in Marvel Comics selects Marc to be his avatar on Earth in exchange for saving his life.

Confused? Yes, we all probably will be for a while as the complex story unfolds on Disney+ over six episodes this spring, but not as confused as Marc. Often depicted as struggling with his mental health, the character is a lot for Marvel to tackle in the often-breezy Marvel Cinematic Universe, but if any phase of the MCU can get the job done properly, it’s Phase 4 aka The Multiverse of Sadness.

Die-hard Moon Knight fans have been waiting for an opportunity to see the Fist of Khonshu onscreen for years, and there have been some perceived near misses over the years. Back in 2017, Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn told a fan on Twitter that he had “a great idea” for a Moon Knight movie but simply didn’t have the time to pursue it. Later, in 2018, former Daredevil showrunner Steven S. DeKnight also expressed a desire to develop a project for the problematic character (what might the Netflix Marvel version of this story have been?). However, 2022 will be the year that Moon Knight finally makes his Marc on Disney+.

I’ve watched the first 4 #MoonKnight eps and I’m as divided by this show as Marc himself. When it works, it’s a wildly original MCU entry with flashes of greatness, but some of the sillier aspects detract from the horror. Moon Knight was created for Marvel by Jeremy Slater (The Umbrella Academy). It’s been directed by Mohamed Diab (Cairo 678), and The Endless duo of Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead. Ethan Hawke stars alongside Isaac as Arthur Harrow, a religious zealot and cult leader that the actor modelled after David Koresh. May Calamawy (Ramy) co-stars as Layla El-Faouly, a woman from Spector’s past, and the late Gaspard Ulliel (Twice Upon a Time) plays Anton Mogart aka Midnight Man, while the iconic F. Murray Abraham voices Khonshu.

The series debuts on Disney March 30.
