15 Boss Fights We Know You Didn’t Beat the First Time

Every gamer remembers the first time they heard the music change and saw a new health bar appear. Boss fights are designed to test everything you’ve learned in a game so far, from mechanics and timing to patience and adaptability. Some are fair but demanding, while others are dang near impossible. They are the battles that send you back to the checkpoint, controller in hand, promising that the next attempt will be different. Deep down, though, we all know the truth. We definitely did not win on the first try.

Sephiroth – Final Fantasy VII

The final battle is long, cinematic, and mechanically demanding. Underprepared players quickly realized grinding mattered.

Ornstein and Smough – Dark Souls

A brutal two on one fight that punishes positioning mistakes. Once one falls, the other becomes even stronger. Panic was inevitable.

The Nameless King – Dark Souls III

Phase one with a dragon. Phase two, with delayed attack timing, destroys muscle memory. Few players survived the first encounter.

Malenia – Elden Ring

Fast, relentless, and capable of healing with every hit. Her infamous flurry attack alone ended countless early attempts.

Mike Tyson – Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out!!

One mistake meant instant knockout. Reaction windows were microscopic. This was less a fight and more a reflex exam.

Yellow Devil – Mega Man

A pattern based nightmare. If you did not memorize the movement sequence, you were done.

Psycho Mantis – Metal Gear Solid

Breaking the fourth wall and reading your memory card was shocking. Realizing you had to switch controller ports felt revolutionary.

Bowser – Super Mario 64

Throw mechanics under pressure were not as easy as they looked. Especially on narrow platforms.

Genichiro Ashina – Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice

This was the skill check. If you had not mastered parrying yet, you learned quickly or you quit.

Shao Kahn – Mortal Kombat II

Unfair reach, devastating damage, and relentless pressure. Arcade design at its most coin hungry.

Ganon – The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

A dramatic final encounter that tested everything learned throughout the adventure.

Vergil – Devil May Cry 3: Dante’s Awakening

Aggressive AI, devastating combos, and zero room for sloppy play. This was pure technical combat mastery.

The Valkyrie Queen – God of War

Optional, yes. Easy, absolutely not. She combined every Valkyrie move into one overwhelming duel.

Sans – Undertale

Minimalist design, maximum suffering. A battle that demanded perfect movement and patience.

Ridley – Metroid

Limited resources and serious damage output made early attempts feel hopeless without preparation.
